The Elixir of Life

Spring 2008. I was at the pinnacle of friendships nourished for the better part of my conscious life.

I had achieved something that is largely unttainable. I had succeeded. It was made clear at an early age that the objective of education was to get into a desirable college (presumably because it would get you a good job). I had achieved this, and hadn’t learned about the grander scheme of life, so in some respects I felt I had achieved everything I was supposed to. Stress, the perpetually unanswered mysteries of life and the glacial physical decay of my body had yet to corrupt my mind. Though unaware of it, I was ‘living in the moment.’

I had discovered love and realized lust, if ya know what I mean. I felt the emotional electricity of romance and all that it entails, and its physiological gifts. This paved new channels of emotion and pleasure within me.

I had discovered the Beatles. Incredible music with incredible human depth, correlating with my evolving depth as a human, and overlapped with a coming of age. An ideal complement to my burgeoning love life and spectrum of emotions.

The seasons were changing. The weather was warmer, the days longer and the Vitamin D stronger.

All of this accumulated to a state of being I wish I could encapsulate in a vial and sell. For then I’d be a billionaire.

And even unhappier.

Good thing I wasn’t unaware of it then otherwise I might have. And the chance to capture it is definitely behind me…
